Someone with a lot more time, patience and creativity than me has taken this one step further and has created this A-Z of Robots.

Apparently I should be 'nesting' at the moment. Really that has just involved spending hours online finding cool things that I am convinced I need for our house. Trawling through the hundreds of #robot tweets - I'm always happy when I dig out a gem from among the usual robot scam / spam tweets.

This one was passed on from @hilarypendleton and is really mandatory for any person that needs a helping hand to hold things.

Daft Punk Coca Cola Commercial

Coca Cola isn't technically robot-themed - but when it comes to music - Daft Punk are Robot Masters.

So it is kind of cool that Coca Cola is releasing Limited Edition Coca Cola bottles whose design us based on the signature helmets worn by the duo.

As reported on HypeBeast:

Following a successful collaboration with Mika in 2010, soft drink giant Coca-Cola follow-up on some exclusively designed bottles with Coca-Cola “Club Coke.” Produced in two distinctive colorways based on Daft Punk mimicking the helmets worn by the French duo, the gold and silver bottles will see a limited production run beginning in March 2011. In addition to the general release at clubs, the bottles will be packaged in a collector’s box as a set, made available exclusively through colette in Paris. Further information on this project will become available through Daftcoke.com, which goes live in a few months

Meet Boris - The Robot of Leisure

There’s something exciting about getting a random email from a fellow Robot friend.

Katharine Miller is a Canadian writer and designer with added penchants for argyle, cocktails, bowler hats, bubble pipes and peppermint stick ice cream.

Her latest creation - Boris - is the robotic-protagonist at the centre of the Robot of Leisure graphic novel series. A collection that tells a take of one robot’s pursuit of happiness and purpose.

While this is the first novel outing for Boris, this delightful character first appeared in 2003 in random doodles, often wearing silly costumes. From there, Miller launched WHiRR as a line of robot-themed paper goods and crafts.

Now the star of this unique series of illustrated novels, he can be enjoyed by all!

An Interview With Katharine Miller

1. What was it about robots that had you drawing Boris back in 2003?

For years I wanted to develop a silent character similar to Mr. Bean to provide a different perspective on universal experiences and traits (loneliness, awkwardness, trying to understand the world, etc.).

Boris evolved out of a series of doodles. I liked the idea of a robot being able to dress up and react to the world around him. Since then, he's always been a martini-swilling retired robot of leisure.

2. Do you have any other favourite Robots?

Roll-oh (Leave it to Roll-oh)

Johnny 5 (Short Circuit)

Bender (Futurama)

Conky (Pee Wee's Playhouse)

I'm not keen on Rosie from The Jetsons, despite some similarities in appearance between her and Boris. Some people might want to describe Boris as perhaps the love child of Rosie and Bender. I haven't programmed Boris with that much sass.

3. Do you think that there are any common traits or personality features of Robots?

I think many robots—especially fictional ones—attempt to comprehend the world beyond their programming. Unfortunately, humans control that world and do the most incomprehensible things. Hilarity ensues.

4. What does the future hold for Boris?

The first two installments of Robot of Leisure are available online—as previews on the website and for purchase through Amazon and other popular ebook stores. I don't want to brag - but in terms of Big Office Cards - I really scored. Ending work in February for Maternity Leave - I was presented with a card designed by one of my team mates - with high aspirations in graphic design. By the standard of the card - I have no doubt that she'll get there with ease. Not only will this be the only office card I will probably ever keep - it's received more attention from recent visitors than any other card!

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Port of Yokohama. It is a pretty important event since it represents the opening of Japan to the world after many centuries of closeness during the Edo period. The Port of Yokohama was one of the first five ports of Japan that opened their traffic to international commerce in 1859.

One of the first events of the 150th anniversary celebration was the arrival of two giant spiders from France created by the french group La Machine. The spiders have been walking around Yokohama during the last three days, it has been spectacular, these are some of my shots:

When my sister went to Mexico last year, she brought me back some great Robot Window gels for the bathroom. I now have found the next best bathroom accessory. This Lime Robot Love Soap is "made with moisturizing glycerin and creamy shea butter. They are made with 3 layers of soaps and have the uplifting scent of lime added!"

Have I told you about my friend Tom?

He writes a really wonderful blog and also shares my passion for Robots. Unlike me, Tom has a very creative and practical mind and can actually create wonderful Robots and other artistic creations.

Now Tom lives in Germany and instead of Postcards - he sends me random Robotic bits and pieces.

The latest message from Tom was in the form of a Robotic Ant.... check the YouTube video. It's great.

A-Pod is an ant inspired hexapod robot with a 2 DOF abdomen (tail), a 3 DOF head with large mandibles. 6 legs with 3 DOF each. Total 25 servos. This video demonstrates body movement and mandible control....

The track is also way cool: Sound track: Artist: Trifonic with Lies (Instrumental).

You know that it's a big Robot News Story when three friends send you the same story in one day. And with the words Adorable and Robot used in the headline - you know it's a winner.

The Gizmodo guys summed up the cuteness pretty well:

When I was 6, I made a Robot costume from a cardboard box and tin foil. Now that I am a few decades older, my choice of Robot wear needs to be more sophisticated.

Lucky there are designers like See By Chloe whose Robot Print Dress are much more in tune with my current style.

A great example of online retailing too - as usual - from a US site. Love the fact you can magnify the material.

Check out this beautiful collection of vintage toy robots .

Though made for children, Japanese toy robots can catch the eye of even the most discriminating adults.

Iconic graphic designer Tom Geismar, whose firm Chermayeff & Geismar has created memorable logos for Mobil, PBS and other U.S. institutions, has been collecting the shiny bots for decades.

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle will exhibit toys from Geismar's collection in Robots: A Designer's Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels through Oct. 26. The vintage robots on display reflect Geismar's trained eye. "I've really restricted myself to ones that appealed to me as interesting, imaginative designs," he says.

So the set started at about 10pm and ended just after 11pm. You couldn't really understand much of what they were singing... and the band didn't move much. Not very engaging.

Apparently this is how they always play. GO figure. So in the scheme of things is must have been an awesome show!

Black Jack Scam in... Malaysia

A friend of mine just came back from holidays in Malaysia. I didn't get any pressies - but I did hear the greatest travel scam story.

Not once but twice did he get approached by a friendly Malayan (and his nieces) but got invited back for lunch, then asked by a 'brother' to invest $20,000 in a game of Black Jack that he would guarantee him of winning.

Politely declining, and then asking for a lift back into the city - both stories involved a last ditch attempt to sign him up with the mention of a dying grandmother.

Saw the Joy Division Documentary last night - highly recommended viewing.

If you've seen 24 Hour Party People and Control - then this is an excellent third chapter.

There's straight up interviews with the band members, amazing footage of the band, and of course the music!

Bjork - Sydney Opera House Steps, January 24th 2008

She returned to Australia after 10 years - and played her only Sydney concert on the steps of the opera house.

If you watched the show without knowing anything about bjork, I think you'd be dumbstruck by the screeching, almost avante-garde performance she put on.

I thought it was brilliant! An all female brass band with flags on their head and an encore that included fireworks.

A few years ago - bands could only put up posters advertising a new CD or upcoming gig. I love the fact that they can now promote their latest video clips. This one I found out side an empty abandoned bank in Kins Cross Sydney. It's like programming Rage from the gutter.
